Small Reads, Big Dreams is a campaign from St Helens Library Service that inspires children to discover the magic of books and the incredible benefits of reading for pleasure. Did you know that reading for fun is the single biggest indicator that a child will grow up to enjoy a happier and more successful life? More than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational backgrounds or their income.

Reading isn’t just about books - it’s about building dreams. When children develop a love for reading, they open the door to endless possibilities. From exciting adventures and magical worlds to real-life stories and new ideas, every page turns into a stepping stone for imagination and learning. 

Research from the National Literacy Trust also demonstrated that children and young people who read in their free time at least once a month said it helps them to:  

• Relax

• Feel happy

• Learn new things

• Understand the views of others

• Learn about other cultures

• Feel confident

Just 10 minutes of reading a day can: 

• Boost mental well-being and reduce stress

• Improve focus and concentration

• Support emotional development

How can I get involved?

We’re inviting children and families across St Helens to embrace the joy of reading! Why not try:

• Visiting one of our libraries where you can explore a wide range of books for all ages and interests
• Setting a reading goal, starting small and building a habit (e.g. read a bedtime story each night, or take 10 minutes after school for reading)
• Sharing your journey with us and others by using the hashtag #SmallReadsBigDreams on social media to showcase your favourite books or inspire others
• Join in with our library events, looking out for story times, book clubs and other reading activities
