Wi-Fi & Computers

Public Computers

Computers are available at all of our branches and are FREE to use. You will need to be a library member to access the computers and can log in with your library card number and PIN/password. You can book a computer in advance to guarantee one will be available to use at the time of your visit.

Our public computers provide access to a wide range of features including:

  • Browsers to explore the internet and access online services
  • Scanning and printing facilities (charges apply for printing)
  • Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Access to special online resources that would usually incur a charge, such as Find My Past
  • Use our digital library to browse and access eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers
  • 3D computer graphics software, Blender

By default you will be granted an hour's session on a PC from time of login, but you can ask library staff to extend the time on your session indefinitely provided the machine is not required by anyone else.

Please Note: If your session runs out of time you will be logged out, at which point any local data on the machine will be automatically wiped to ensure privacy and security in-between users. You should ensure you save any work on a personal storage device or online to ensure you do not lose progress. Public computers will automatically shut down approximately 15 minutes before the library's closing time and staff are unable to extend sessions beyond this time.

    Wi-Fi

All of our libraries have public wi-fi networks which you can access for FREE with your personal device. Connect your mobile phone, tablet or laptop and browse the web from the comfort of our libraries without having to pay for mobile data.

Look for the open network called "VISITOR" on your device. When you connect you will be asked to sign in with a name and email address to extend your session. You do not have to be a library member to connect to the public Wi-Fi network.

    Hublets

Hublets are Samsung Galaxy tablets which library members can borrow for us within the library. All you need is your St Helens Library Service library card number and PIN/password to check out a device. When you're finished simply return the device to the docking station where any personal data will be wiped to ensure your privacy and the Hublet can be recharged, ready for the next customer.

You can use our Hublets to:

    • Browse the internet and access online services
    • Browse our library catalogue and manage your account
    • Access eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers via BorrowBox
    • Use popular apps such as Sky News, BBC Sounds, NHS App and more

We currently have Hublets available to use at the following libraries:

    • Chester Lane Library
    • Haydock Library
    • Moss Bank Library
    • Newton-le-Willows Library

Please Note: These devices will not work outside of the range of our Wi-Fi network and can only be used on site.

    Digital Support

Do you need help using technology?

While our library staff are happy to offer basic advice on how to use the technology within our buildings, we also have volunteers who run weekly Digital Drop-In sessions at our libraries.

Our volunteers are here to offer help and support with any technology-related questions or issues you may have. Let us help you gain confidence in using technology, whether you’re new to digital services or just need a refresher.
